Context ...

In the introductory section of this course, we'll start by defining the broad subject, in modules on what is microbial diversity? and the fundamental similarity of all living things. This will, perhaps, give you some idea of where we're headed in this course.

... & Historical Baggage

This will be followed by a series of modules (the evolution of evolutionary thought, taxonomy vs phylogeny, and the false prokaryote/eukaryote dichotomy) that are primarily intended to point out outdated relics of pre-Darwinian perspectives that unfortunately remain imbedded in the way most people, even biologists, think. The reason for dwelling on this is simple -the first and hardest, step in learning something new is to identify old, outmoding knowledge, and unlearning it.
