Discussion session by remote-control today

I've had car trouble this morning (wheel bearing), and won't be able to make it to Raleigh in time for todays Discussion session.

If you wish, we can do the discussion session by Skype or FaceTime - if any of you that wish to meet in class can give me your Skype/Facetime info. For me its:

  • Skype : jameswbrowniii
  • Facetime : james_w_brown@earthlink.net

If you want to meet in the class room, I can connect to one of you and go through the presentation remotely.

Otherwise, we can just plan on each of you doing the Discussion session online. I'm good with whatever you wish, just let me know by email if you want to Skype/Facetime in from the classroom.

Exams and Discussion sessions graded and scores posted

I've posted scores for the second midterm exam and all of the Discussion sessions to date. I'm sorry for the delay getting these done. The average on the exam was 76%, making the overall class average now (with Discussion sessions) also 76%, but this includes a number of zero's from students who, although still enrolled, are no longer participating. You can pick up your exams in class or lab, or schedule an appointment with me to pick it up.

Midterm exam #2 Take-home section

Here is the take-home section of the second midterm exam. Note the rules about how to take this at the top of the first page. You should turn this in when you take the "in-class" section of the exam, either actually in class or at the DELTA testing center. The take-home section of the exam is half of the exam (590 out of 100 points).

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCMENTS - READ CAREFULLY

I found our yesterday morning that I really need to be gone for a funeral next week, and I've been sorting out a solution for this class (made more difficult by the fact that there are both traditional and online students in the class). The funeral is overseas, so I'll be gone from this Friday (March 17th) through the following Friday (March 24th). Yes, I know this is bad timing, especially after missing a Friday for a work-related trip, and a lecture day before that from the flu.

1. We will not meet in class during the time I am gone:

  • We won't meet in person this Friday (March 17th) for the Discussion session - we'll have to rely, again, on you-all doing it online.
  • We won't meet for lecture Monday or Wedneday for lecture. I'll be adjusting the schedule to cover the Archaea the following week instead.
  • We won't meet in person next Friday (March 24th) for the Discussion session - we'll have to rely (once again) on you-all doing it online.
  • None of this affects online students

2. In order to acommodate this missing time, I've had to make some changes to the class schedule - you'll see these on the Schedule page. The most important of these changes is that the second midterm exam is delayed by one week. This affects both traditional and online students. This means I'll be giving you the take portion of the exam on MArch 29th. Traditional students (section 001) will take the in-class portion of the exam April 5th, and online students (section 601) will be able to take the exam between April 5th and April 7th.

Dr. Brown will be out of town!

Two important items for this week:

1. I'll be doing a program review at UC-Riverside Wednesday through Saturday, so we won't meet Wednesday for lecture - we'll have to rely (once again) on you-all doing it online.

2. Remember that next week is Spring Break, and so we do NOT have a Discussion session scheduled for Friday.

I've got the flu - no class today

I've got the flu, and can't come in to NCSU today, so we won't meet today for lecture - we'll have to rely on you-all doing it online.

I've posted scores for the exam. The average was 75%, making the overall class average now (with Discussion sessions) about 80%. You can pick up your exams in class or lab, or schedule an appointment with me to pick it up.

Tomorrows (Friday) Discussion session

My father in-law has had a health crisis and I'm on my way to New Jersey to help over the weekend. As a result, the Discussion session tomorrow (Friday Feb 17) will be entirely online, I will not be in class. Of course I would not object to those of you who wish to do so meeting in the classroom at the usual time and working on this in groups.

Midterm exam #1 for Distance Ed students

Because of a miscommunication with the folks in DELTA, the exam (Midterm exam #1) is scheduled with them for Wednesday through Friday, rather than today through Wednesday.

I'm sorry for this late change.

Midterm exam #1 Take-home section

Here is the take-home section of the first midterm exam. Note the rules about how to take this at the top of the first page. You should turn this in when you take the "in-class" section of the exam, either actually in class or at the DELTA testing center. The take-home section of the exam is a bit more than half of the exam (55 out of 100 points).

Discussion session Friday (Jan 13)

I will, unfortunately, be out of town Friday, so our first Discussion session will be handled entirely online. Start by going to the "Discussion" link in the menubar above. Future Discussion sessions will be available either face-to-face during classtime or online.

Accounts (username/password) on the course web server

I have created accounts for all registered students so that you can access the course content without using the generic username/password I gave out in class yesterday. Your username is your Unity ID (the bit of your email address before the "@ncsu.edu"), and your password is the PIN you gabve me. If you've given me a PIN, I've assigned one arbitrarily - a quick email to me and I'll send it to you. If you have trouble using this username/password combination, please let me know.

Having trouble accessing the web content?.

Every year, a few students have trouble the first time (or so) accessing the course lecture notes. The server returns an error message instead of prompting for a username and password. I've never figured out what the problem is, but there is an easy workaround.

Click on the "Discussion" menu at the top of the page - when entering the Discussion session site, you should be properly prompted for your username and password. Once you've done so and are on the Discussion main page, use the link at the bottom of the page to go back to the MB 451 general web site, and when you go a lecture page you should be correctly prompted for your username and password. If this workaround doesn't work, or you have any other kind of problem accessing the site, let me know right away.

Depending on your security setting, you're usually not asked for this info after the first time - your computer automatically supplies the username and password, and you're automatically allowed in.
