2001 NC ASM Meeting
March 30, 2001
North Carolina Biotechnology Center

The North Carolina Branch held it's annual meeting on March 30, 2001 at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in the Research Triangle Park. The meeting, organized by President-Elect Shermalyn Green (UNC), had an excellent turnout of both regular (35) and student (27) members. Following a delicious luncheon, Daniel Wozniak (WFUSM) presented an interesting talk entitled "Coordinate Regulation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Virulence Determinants." His seminar was followed by 6 student presentations representing NCSU, WFUSM, NCA&T, and ECU. The Foundation of Microbiology speaker, Phillip Carter (NCSU), presented an informative and timely lecture entitled "Gulf War Illnesses and the Potential for Biological Terrorism." There were 3 posters (NCSU, US EPA, Syngenta) presented. Ms. Deborah Ramsey, a Ph.D. candidate at WFUSM, won the Mary Poston Award presented for the best student talk. Ms. Ramsey's presentation was entitled "AlgZ-Mediated Control of Pseudomonas aeruginosa algD and algZ transcription."

During the meeting, there was a brief but productive business meeting. Candidates for office were nominated and voted in unanimously by the regular members. Election results are as follows: President, Shermalyn Greene (UNC); President-Elect, Steve Libby (NCSU); Secretary-Treasurer, Beth George (US EPA); Councilor, Paul Phibbs (ECU); Alternate Councilor, Jim Brown (NCSU).
