MB 420 issues

There has been some concern about changes in MB 420 scheduling and BTEC. Microbiology and BTEC are working to coordinate and finalize these changes, and will let you know when they are finalized.

However, you should be aware that BEC classes can be counted toward Microbiology restricted electives (in either the Micro major or minor) ONLY if these classes are cross-listed in Microbiology. BEC 420 can therefore be used as a restricted elective; BEC 463 cannot.

This being said, because it is a 400-level lab course, BEC 463 CAN be used in the Microbiology major to fulfill (in part) the Laboratory elective.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, PLEASE feel free to contact me at james_brown@ncsu.edu

Does anybody look at this?

My impression is that the MB UG program Facebook page is a lot more useful than this weblog. So my plan is to continue to use this weblog ONLY to drop stuff that's to much for a Facebook posting, and link the FB posting to this page.

If you prefer to use this weblog over FB, please let me know - if more than a couple of people do so, I'll continue to post everything here as well.

Planning to graduate this Fall?

If you do plan to graduate this December, you should start on the paperwork now.

Although it may seem early to start worrying about this now, an important reason to do this is to make sure you are registered for all of the classes this Fall that you need to graduate. If you find out in September that you're a class short, it'll be too late to fix it.

Attached is a "Student Guide to the Graduation Application" - this explains how you need to deal with the ONLINE Graduation Application:

Next, you need to fill out as much of the PAPER CALS Graduations Clearance Form:

You'll need to take this to your advisor to finish, so make an appointment to get this done. Your Summer/Fall advising appointment is a good time to do this. BUT BEFORE YOU MEET WITH YOUR ADVISOR, YOU'LL NEED TO VISIT ANY DEPARTMENT OFFICES YOU'LL BE GETTING MINORS FROM TO COLLECT THE APPROPRIATE "APPLICATION OF MINOR CERTIFICATION" FORMS.

If you have trouble getting the paperwork completed with your advisor, visit either Robert Davis in the Microbiology office or me in my office for help. Your advisor will check over your degree audit, and you'll fill out the form for any course substitutions that might be required. He or she will also fill out a "CALS Graduation Checklist" so we can follow your paperwork around. All of this stuff should be turned in together to Robert in the Microbiology office.

CALS graduation info, including the forms and directions for filling them out, can be found at:

There is also useful information on the general NCSU web site about graduation at:

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!

Latino networking in CALS and NCSU

Hello students:

In conjunction with the NC Society of Hispanic Professional's Hispanic Educational Summit, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is holding a networking event for Latino faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students on Friday, March 25th from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. at the McKimmon Center.

Top 5 reasons why should you come and enjoy this time of food, fun, and fellowship? You will:
1. Meet the CALS Latino Faculty family of mentors (Network with the CALS Spanish Faculty family and find your mentor)
2. Meet other Latino graduate and undergraduate students.
3. Help us understand what we can do as Latino faculty in the college to better serve you.
4. Share how we can collectively work together to help and reach out to Latino high school and middle school students in the area.
5. Learn about resources in CALS and through NC State that are available for Latino students.

We hope to see you on Friday, March 25th at 12:00 noon at the McKimmon Center. It is okay if you can not stay the entire time due to classes. The McKimmon Center is a part of NC State and is located on the Wolfline bus route #5 (tell the driver you're going to McKimmon and the drop off/pick up is right in front of the building). There is also free parking if you would like to drive.

We hope to see you there!
